Distortion-Free Photography: Why Straight Lines Matter

There are many reasons why hotels engage professional photographers, but one of the most overlooked is lens distortion. So, what is distortion, and why does it matter?

Lens distortion occurs when straight lines appear curved or when objects become stretched towards the edges of an image. In architectural and hotel photography, this can have a significant impact on the quality and credibility of a photograph.

Luxury hotels and discerning clients expect imagery that accurately represents their spaces, with true-to-life proportions, clean lines, and a natural sense of perspective. Even subtle distortion can alter the appearance of a room, making spaces feel unrealistic and ultimately detracting from the premium experience a property is trying to convey.

Professional photography is about more than simply capturing a room—it is about presenting it exactly as it was designed. Distortion compromises accurate geometry, diminishes realism, and can make even the most beautiful interior appear unprofessional.

That said, wide-angle photography certainly has its place. A grand hotel lobby, expansive suite, or impressive reception area often benefits from a wider perspective. The challenge is that the wider the lens, the greater the risk of distortion.

One of the techniques Gordon uses to overcome this is photographing with a shift lens. Unlike conventional lenses, a shift lens moves parallel to the camera sensor, allowing perspective correction while keeping vertical and horizontal lines perfectly straight. This makes it an invaluable tool for luxury hotel and architectural photography.

For particularly wide scenes, Gordon will often capture two or three images—left, centre, and right—and seamlessly stitch them together in post-production. The result is an ultra-wide panoramic image with exceptional detail and virtually no distortion.

Combined with a medium format camera system, this technique delivers images with extraordinary resolution, natural proportions, and the clean lines that discerning clients expect.
